Women’s Golf Finishes Runner-Up At Big West Championship

Final Results  |  Live Scoring

DAVIS, Calif. – University of Hawai'i women's golf team finished runner-up at the 2015 Big West Conference Championship, following Tuesday's third and final round at the El Macero Country Club. UH's three-round score of 887 was its best in the program's history.

The second place finish also marked the school's highest placement at a conference tournament since the 2010 squad was runner-up at the Western Athletic Conference Championship.

Sophomore Raquel Ek was runner-up in the individual standings, completing the three rounds in 3-under 213 following a final round 73. Ek, a sophomore from San Diego, Calif., finished the tourney five strokes behind medalist Andrea Wong of UC Davis (208), who shot a final round 69. Wong and Ek were the only two individuals to finish under par over the three days.

UCD, ranked No. 22 nationally, captured its sixth consecutive Big West championship with an 858 total. UC Riverside and Long Beach State tied for third (906), followed by Cal Poly (914), Cal State Fullerton (915), UC Irvine (926), and CSUN (939).

In addition to Ek, junior Nichole Cruz was seventh at 5-over 221 following a final round 77 while sophomore Izzy Leung tied for 10th at 8-over 224 after a third round 79. For Leung, it marked her sixth career Top 10 finish – and third this season – in two years at UH.

Freshman Marie Donnici completed her first Big West Championship tied for 22nd at 232 (74-78-70) while sophomore Brianna Becker tied for 32nd at 237 (82-78-77).

Ek, who entered the day one-stroke behind Wong, was trying to become the second UH golfer to win a tournament this season after Leung won the season-opening Oregon State Invitational in September. Prior to this week, Ek had never broken par in her two seasons at UH and her best finish was a tie for fourth at the 2013 Rainbow Wahine Invitational.

UH opened the tourney with a first round 291 – its lowest total since the first round of the 2002 Ping Cougar Classic – before bettering their score the next day by one stroke with a second round 290.

Following the tournament, the Big West announced its all-conference awards and Leung was selected second-team all-Big West while Ek was honorable mention.

The Big West Championship concludes the 2014-15 season for the Rainbow Wahine.
