Live ScoringDAVIS, Calif. – University of Hawai'i women's golf team remains in second place following the second round of the Big West Conference Women's Golf Championships, Monday, at the El Macero Country Club. Sophomore
Raquel Ek shot a career-low 68 to move within one stroke of the lead heading into Tuesday final round.
The Rainbow Wahine are 12 strokes behind leader No. 22 UC Davis, who shot 281 for a 569 total. UH bettered its first round score by one stroke with a 290 on Monday is the closest competitor to the five-time defending champions. Hawai'i (581) is also 19 strokes clear of third place UC Riverside (600).
Ek is one stroke behind UCD's Andrea Wong, who also shot 68 on Monday and is 5-under 139 for the tourney. Ek posted five birdies and one bogey during her round, which marked the first time she shot under par in two seasons at UH. She is second all alone at 4-under 140, one stroke better than UC Riverside's Savannah Vilaubi.
Cruz, UH's top finisher on Sunday, shot 2-over 74 during a round that included two birdies and four bogeys. The Rancho Murieta, Calif., native is in a three-way tie for fifth place at even par 144 for the tourney. One stroke back is sophomore
Izzy Leung, who posted 2-under 70 and is in eighth place at 1-over 145. The Shatin, Hong Kong native posted three birdies on her front nine and her only blemish of the day was a bogey on the par-4 13
th.
Freshman
Marie Donnici had a rough back nine, with three bogeys and two doubles to finish with a second round 78 and is tied for 14
th at 152. Sophomore
Brianna Becker improved four shots from her first round 82 with a 78 and is tied for 35
th at 160.
UH made the turn at 5-under for the round but the back nine proved difficult as the team shot a collective 7-over. Still the Rainbow Wahine are off to their best start ever at a conference tournament. UH has never won a conference tourney and most recently its best finish was runner-up at the 2010 Western Athletic Conference Championships.
The tournament concludes on Tuesday with UH pared with UCD and UCR in the featured groups. Their first tee time is 9:00 a.m. PT.
