HONOLULU – The No. 2 University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine sand volleyball team closed its home slate in style, going a perfect 3-0 with wins over Grand Canyon, San Jose State and Hawai'i Pacific at the inaugural Outrigger Resorts Invitational, Sunday on Senior Night at the Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex.
 
The competition featured the final home matches for seniors Sammie Brown, Olivia Urban, and Brittany Tiegs who were honored with a special ceremony at the conclusion of the tournament.
 
The competition, which began at 12:00 p.m. with dual match pairings between HPU and UH, concluded with a pair of Hawai'i matches broadcast live statewide on OCSports. Olivia Urban and Katie Spieler topped the SJSU pair of Jamie Hirai and Allison Morgan 21-7, 21-15 to open the televised doubleheader. Spieler delivered an impressive stat line with 24 kills and 15 digs with Urban adding eight kills, nine digs, and two blocks. Brittany Tiegs and Sammie Brown were not as successful in the nightcap, falling to Grand Canyon's Shannon Dugan and MacKenzie Phelps 21-19, 21-18.
 
The 'Bows (15-1) opened the day with five dominating wins over HPU with UH surrendering no more than 11 points in any one set. Ka'iwi Schucht had 10 aces in her win at the three with Mikayla Tucker.
 
UH was nearly as dominant in five wins over the Spartans. Hannah Rooks turned in a monster performance in her four flight match with partner London Chow. She crushed 31 kills while adding 13 digs, two blocks, and three aces.
 
The 'Bows will have one more competition before heading off to Gulf Shores, Alabama for the AVCA National Championships. They will play next Saturday, Apr. 25 in the inaugural Aloha Invitational at the Queen's Beach Sandbox.
