Nichole Cruz is in second place following the first round of the Big West Conference Women's Golf Championships, Sunday, at the El Macero Country Club.
Cruz, a junior from nearby Rancho Murieta, Calif., shot a career-low 2-under 70 to pace the Rainbow Wahine, who are three strokes behind first round leader UC Davis and in second place with a 291 total. Cruz posted four birdies and two bogeys during her round and trails first round leader Blair Lewis of UC Davis (68) by two strokes.
In addition to Cruz, two other UH golfers are among the Top 10; sophomore
Raquel Ek, who is even par 72 and in sixth place and freshman
Marie Donnici, who shot 2-over 74 and is tied for eighth. Ek parred her first 11 holes before posting two birdies and two bogeys during a five-hole stretch. Donnici eclipsed her best round as a Rainbow Wahine.

Izzy Leung is in a seven-way tie for 11
th place following a first round 75 while sophomore
Brianna Becker is tied for 35
th after an 82.
UC Davis is the five-time defending tournament champion. Cal Poly is in third (293) followed by UC Riverside (299), Long Beach State (304), CSUN (307), and Cal State Fullerton and UC Irvine (313).
UH's 291 was its best single-round score since the first round of the 2002 Ping Cougar Classic (283) and its best at a conference tournament since 1985.
The tournament continues on Monday with UH pared with UCD and Cal Poly in the featured groups. Their first tee time is 10:30 a.m. PT.
