Men’s Golf Finishes Play At Western Intercollegiate

Live Results | Final Results

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i men's golf team completed play at the 69th The Transamerica/WFG Western Intercollegiate, Sunday with a 14th place finish at the famed Pasatiempo Golf Club.

The Rainbow Warriors completed the three rounds – and play-6-score-5 format – in 1,219 strokes, 167 behind team champion, Texas (1,052).

"On behalf of my team, I want to sincerely apologize for our embarrassing performance this week at the Western Intercollegiate, one of the most prestigious collegiate golf events in the country," head coach Ronn Miyashiro said. "As the head coach of this program, I take full responsibility for our play. I try everyday to instill in our players that when we step on the course, we will represent everyone at home to the best of our ability. That was not the case this week. We embarrassed ourselves, our school, our alumni and our families. Going forward, I will do everything in my power to make sure that this never happens again. We will work tirelessly to put out a product on the golf course that everyone can be proud of."

UH shot a 415 in the first round and saw its second round suspended due to darkness on Saturday. The team completed the round Sunday morning with a 409 total and shot 395 in its third round.

Hawai'i's top finisher was sophomore Skye Inakoshi, who put together rounds of 76, 74, and 80 for a 230 total and tie for 73rd place. Junior Scotty Yamashita shot a team-best 75 for his third round to finish at 238 (83-80-75) and tie for 83rd place.

Sophomore Pono Tokioka battled back from a second round 90 to shoot 78 in his third round for a 251 total (83-90-78) for 92nd place. One shot back was senior Brian Lee, who shot rounds of 88, 83, and 81 for a 252 total and 93rd place. Junior Justin Chu placed 94th at 254 (89-82-83) while senior Ryan Kuroiwa was DQ'd in his second round and did not post a finishing score, although shooting 81 in his third round.

Texas' Scottie Scheffler, ranked 37th nationally, went wire-to-wire to capture medalist honors at 9-under 201 after three sub-70 rounds (66-68-67). California's Shotaro Ban was runner-up at 6-under 204.

The Rainbow Warriors will next compete in the Big West Conference Championships, April 26-28, in San Luis Obispo, Calif.
