Rainbow Wahine Invitational Results (Day 1)HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i women's sand volleyball team served up the 2015 season in fantastic fashion, beating top-ranked and defending national champion Pepperdine on Friday at the Queen's Beach Sandbox.

Not only did the SandBows send shockwaves through the sand volleyball world, it was the first set they took off the Waves in six meetings. After the UH pairs of
Brittany Tiegs and
Nikki Taylor, and
Olivia Urban and
Katie Spieler won on the No. 1 and No. 2 courts, respectively, the contest was headed for a deciding fifth game. On the four court,
Mikayla Tucker and
Lara Schreiber dropped the opening set but rallied to beat Sophie Asprey and Taylor Rocich in 16-21, 21-12, 15-8.
Tiegs and Taylor had to rally for a 14-21, 21-14, 15-8 win, but Urban and Spieler dominated the Wave tandem of Delany Knudsen and Lara Dykstra, 21-16, 21-16.

The 'Bows faced Loyola Marymount in the opening dual match of the day, beating the Lions 4-1. Match two saw Pepperdine win by the same score against LMU before losing to Hawai'i to close the morning's action.

The afternoon session featured pool play for the Rainbow Wahine Invitational pairs tournament. UH's
Olivia Urban and
Katie Spieler advanced to the gold single elimination bracket with two straight-set wins.

Gold, silver, and bronze bracket play gets underway Saturday morning at 8:00 a.m. at the Queen's Beach Sandbox.
