SANTA CRUZ, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine sand volleyball team capped a stellar weekend at the Santa Cruz Collegiate Challenge, sweeping the gold, silver, and bronze pairs competitions on Sunday at Main Beach.
The gold bracket final featured two Hawai'i teams, but it would be the top pair of
Brittany Tiegs and
Nikki Taylor who would come out on top. The duo took the opening set off
Katie Spieler and
Olivia Urban, 21-19, before Urban had to withdraw.
Sammie Brown and
Hannah Rooks won the silver bracket which almost turned out to be another all-UH final.
Heather Boyan and
Lara Schreiber lost in the semifinals to Santa Clara 17-21, 21-16, 15-12. Brown and Rooks took down Santa Clara's Katrina Inch and Sarah Vacarro 21-18, 21-14 to win the title
London Chow and
Hannah Zalopany topped CSU Bakersfield's Star Tucker-Campbell and Luiza Martins to win the bronze final and, for good measure,
Mikayla Tucker and Kaiwi Schucht won the exhibition title.
The 'Bows now return home and will enjoy their first weekend off from collegiate competition. UH retakes the courts when they travel to Hermosa Beach, Calif. for the USA Volleyball Beach Collegiate Challenge Apr. 11-12.
