HONOLULU – In the first-ever sand volleyball match played at the Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex, the top-ranked University of Hawai'i sand volleyball team fell 5-0 to No. 3 Southern California on Wednesday night. The match was also broadcast statewide on OCSports.
 
Gianna Guinasso and Sydney Shinn provided the lone win for the 'Bows (4-1) with a three-set win over Jo Kremer and Lorna Brandt in a match that did not factor in the result. Guinasso had 14 kills and 11 digs in the winning effort.
 
The UH pairs of London Chow and Hannah Zalopany, and Heather Boyan and Lara Schreiber fell at the four and five, respectively. USC (4-0) clinched the match on the three court when Eve Ettinger and Meg Norton rallied to top Sammie Brown and Hannah Rooks, 17-21, 21-17, 15-9. Rooks impressed in the losing effort with 22 kills, 10 digs, and two blocks.
 
TV went live for the No. 1 and No. 2 pairings but it were the Women of Troy who continued to dominate. Katie Spieler and Olivia Urban fell in straight sets at the two, and Brittany Tiegs and Nikki Taylor fell on the one court in three sets in the final match of the night.
 
The 'Bows continue their busy week of action with the Queen of the Beach Challenge which takes place on Friday at the Queen's Beach Sandbox and Saturday back at the T.C. Ching courts.
