Box Score (html)DAVIS, Calif.—The No. 7 University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team (23-1, 13-0 Big West) captured at least a share of the Big West Conference title with a four set win at UC Davis, 23-25, 25-17, 25-22, 25-17. For the Rainbow Wahine, it marked their 18th-straight win as they remained the lone unbeated team in conference at 13-0. Opposite
Nikki Taylor led UH with a match-high 21 kills while
Tai Manu-Olevao added 11 and
Olivia Magill had 10 kills to drive UH to the win. UH setter
Tayler Higgins dished out 41 assists and libero
Savanah Kahakai had a team-high 15 digs.
For Taylor, it was the sixth time this season that she's eclipsed the 20-kill mark, and the second time doing so in the last three matches. She added five blocks and was one dig shy of a double-double with nine on the night.
Magill led UH with six blocks for the match to go with her 10 kills. The Rainbow Wahine out- blocked the Aggies, 10.0-to-8.0 and out-hit UCD, .234-to-.113.
The Aggies fought back to capture the opening set. Except for the first point, UH led for the majority of the set, by as much as five points twice. But UC Davis kept chipping away, tying the score four times then finally taking their first lead at 24-23. The Aggies got the set win off a Aima Eichie kill to steal a 25-23 first set win. Taylor led UH with six kills while Magill added five kills. Both led UH with two blocks apiece.
The Rainbow Wahine tied the match at 1-1, taking the second set, 25-17. UH led early in the set, but then seven point serving run by
Kalei Greeley propelled the 'Bows to a 12-5 lead. Clare Marie-Anderson and Kahakai both had runs of four serves each as well to help UH push past the Aggies to even things up.
In the third set, the Aggies came out on fire, scoring the first five points of the stanza before UH could get their footing. The Rainbow Wahine though, chipped away and eventually caught and overtook the Aggies on a six-point scoring run with Higgins behind the serving line. Higgins started serving with UH trailing 11-12 and finished her run with the 'Bows leading 15-13. Hawai'i then held off the Aggies to take a 2-1 lead in sets with a 25-22 win.
Hawai'i was sluggish again at the start of the fourth set. UH found themselves down by five points again, trailing 4-9. But once again the 'Bows battled their way back. UH caught the Aggies at 10-10 and then again at 11-11 before taking their first lead of the set at 12-11. Hawai'i won six of the last eight points of the match to close out the Aggies, 25-17.
UH remains on the road and is the middle of a stretch of six-straight road matches to end the season. The 'Bows will fly to Los Angeles, Calif. tonight and will take on UC Irvine on Tuesday, Nov. 17.
