Match NotesHONOLULU—The No. 6 University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team (18-1, 8-0 Big West) closes its home schedule with two matches this week against UC Riverside (7-15, 2-7 Big West) on Friday, Oct. 30 with Senior Night on Sunday, Nov. 1 against Cal State Fullerton (0-20, 0-8 Big West). The matches will start at 7:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. respectively. The Rainbow Wahine will honor its two seniors—
Olivia Magill and
Tai Manu-Olevao—at the conclusion of Sunday's match. Sunday's match is also a "Whiteout" in which fans are encouraged to wear white to UH's final home match of the season.
Although idle last week, Hawai'i rose two spots to No. 6 in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) and three spots in the RPI to No. 23. It is the highest AVCA ranking for the Rainbow Wahine since UH was ranked No. 5 in Week #6 during the 2013 season. Hawai'i is currently on a 13-match win-streak--its longest win-streak since UH won 19-straight in the 2012 season.
Hawai'i continues to lead the nation as the No. 1 blocking team in the NCAA averaging 3.50 blocks per set. Magill is ranked No. 2 in the NCAA and No. 1 in the Big West with 1.69 blocks per set.
Emily Maglio is ranked No. 26 in the nation and No. 2 in conference with 1.35 blocks per set while
Nikki Taylor is third in the league and No. 39 in the NCAA with 1.29 blocks per set.
Magill also leads the Big West Conference with a .394 hitting percentage and 108 total blocks while Taylor is tops in the conference with 0.49 aces per set; 31 total service aces; and 5.49 points per set (kills + blocks + aces).
With three starters down at the start of UH's last match against UC Irvine, Manu-Olevao stepped up her game to earn Big West Player of the Week honors after recording a team-high 27 kills in UH's two matches a week ago. Manu-Olevao was the lone Rainbow Wahine to record double-digit kills with 12 in UH's sweep over UC Davis, hitting .375 for the match with just three errors in 24 swings with five digs and two assists. Against UC Irvine, she recorded a season-high 19.5 points with a team-high 15 kills and a career-high seven blocks in the four-set victory over the Anteaters. Her two solo blocks also was a career-high. She notched her second double-double of the season with 11 digs and 15 kills. For the week, she averaged 3.86 kills, 2.29 digs and 1.00 blocks per set. Manu-Olevao was the fourth Rainbow Wahine to earn a weekly conference honor this season.
With the exception of junior middle hitter
Annie Mitchem, who is out after under going surgery for a fractured dislocated little finger on her right hand, the Rainbow Wahine should be at full strength after the team used their bye week to hopefully heal up as best they could.
