HONOLULU-The University of Hawai'i men's tennis team opens the 2015 spring season by hosting the Rainbow Warrior Classic from January 7-9 at the UH Tennis Complex. Hawai'i will be taking on No. 12 Duke and No. 39 Louisville in the three-day tournament.
The Rainbow Warriors are led by seniors
Nils Schuhmann and
Chas Okamoto. Last season, Schuhmann earned first team all-Big West honors in doubles with partner
David Schuster and second team all-Big West in singles. Overall he posted an 8-8 singles record while going 3-1 in Big West action. This past fall, Schuhmann won his first two matches in straight sets to start the ITA/USTA Southwest Regional, but fell in the Round of 32 to Marko Goles-Babic of San Diego State. Last season, Okamoto won four of his last five singles matches en route to earningBig West honorable mention honors in singles. Overall, he posted a 9-10 record in singles overall while recording a 3-1 mark in conference.
The Blue Devils are led by four players in the first ITA ranking of the year. Freshman Nicolas Alvarez had a strong fall and comes into this week ranked No. 18. Senior Jason Tahir who advanced to the Round of 16 in the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships in Flushing, N.Y. is ranked No. 36, while Raphael Hemmeler and Bruno Semenzato are at No. 103 and No. 112 respectively.
The Cardinals' roster are led by senior Sebastian Stiefelmeyer who is currently ranked No. 1 in the nation after capturing the ITA Men's All-American Championships and advancing to the Round of 16 in the Indoor Championships this past fall. Last season, Stiefelmeyer posted a 23-16 overall record and was 19-6 in dual matches mostly playing on the No.1 court. Fellow senior Albert Wagner is currently ranked No. 59. Last year, Wagner went 23-14 overall and 15-9 in dual matches. In doubles, the duo of Albert Wagner and Chris Simich enter the year ranked No. 58 as they recorded a 21-6 overall record together in 2014.
