PALM DESERT, Calif. - The University of Hawai'i women's golf team dropped four spots and completed the Wyoming Cowgirl Desert Intercollegiate in eighth place Sunday at The Classic Club. UH sophomore Izzy Leung also fell back and tied for 10th.
As a team, the Rainbow Wahine shot 322, their highest score of the tournament and completed the three rounds in 940 (313-305-322). San Jose State ran away with the title with a 893 total after a 292 on Sunday. New Mexico State was runner-up at 917, 24 strokes behind the Spartans.
Leung, who was looking to win her second straight tournament to start the season, finished with an 81 after a disastrous front nine 46, which included five bogeys, one double-bogey and one triple. The Shatin, Hong Kong native settled down on the back and shot 1-under to post a 229 (74-74-81) for her fifth career Top 10.
Sophomore Raquel Ek recorded her third straight scores in the 70s with a final round 77 for a 234 total (79-78-77) to tie for 24th. Sophomore Brianna Becker finished with a 240 total (84-76-80) and tied for 49th while junior Nichole Cruz tied for 60th place with a 243 total (79-80-84).
Freshman Marie Donnici completed her first career collegiate tournament at 244 (81-77-86) for a tie for 64th.
San Jose State's Megan Osland, the Day 1 leader, shot even par 72 to win take medallist honors going away at 1-over 217. Her teammate Elizabeth Schultz and Grand Canyon's Charlotte Jaengkit tied for second at 224.
The Rainbow Wahine will next compete in the Eden Ihlanfeldt Invitational in Sammamish, Wash., Oct. 7-8.
