Riviera/ITA All-American Championships Pre-Qualifying Results

LOS ANGELES, Calif.—University of Hawai`i sophomore Cindy Nguyen fell in the pre-qualifying opening round of the Riviera/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-American Championships. Nguyen was held off by Rutuja Bhosale of Texas A&M in a three-set battle, 1-6, 6-4, 3-6 on Saturday at the UCLA Sycamore Tennis Courts.

Nguyen got off to a slow start and was unable to figure out how to stop Bhosale in the first set, falling 1-6 in the opening frame. In the second set, Bhosale raced out to a 4-1 lead, but Nguyen kept fighting. Nguyen turned the momentum around to reel of five-straight games to capture the second set, 6-4. But in the final set, she missed some key points down the stretch as Bhosale was able to close out the match with a 6-3 win in the third and deciding set.

Nguyen was just the fourth Rainbow Wahine under head coach Jun Hernandez to be invited to the ITA All-American Championships. She is currently ranked No. 96 in the pre-season ITA polls.

The Rainbow Wahine open their fall season with the UH `Anuenue Invitational which runs from Saturday, Oct. 4-Monday, Oct. 5. Saturday and Sunday's matches start at 1:00 pm. Monday's matches commence at 8:00 am at the UH Tennis Complex.
