Riviera/ITA All-American Championships Pre-Qualifying ResultsLOS ANGELES, Calif.—University of Hawai`i sophomore
Cindy Nguyen fell in the pre-qualifying opening round of the Riviera/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-American Championships. Nguyen was held off by Rutuja Bhosale of Texas A&M in a three-set battle, 1-6, 6-4, 3-6 on Saturday at the UCLA Sycamore Tennis Courts.
Nguyen got off to a slow start and was unable to figure out how to stop Bhosale in the first set, falling 1-6 in the opening frame. In the second set, Bhosale raced out to a 4-1 lead, but Nguyen kept fighting. Nguyen turned the momentum around to reel of five-straight games to capture the second set, 6-4. But in the final set, she missed some key points down the stretch as Bhosale was able to close out the match with a 6-3 win in the third and deciding set.
