HONOLULU –
Olivia Magill and
Nikki Taylor each had a team-high 11 kills,
Sarah Mendoza added a match-high 14 digs and the University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine volleyball team swept Northern Arizona on Friday night in the first of back-to-back matches against the Lumberjacks at the Stan Sheriff Center. Set scores were 25-18, 25-15, 25-18.
Lauren Jacobsen posted a match-high 12 kills for Northern Arizona who dropped its first match of the season to fall to 9-1. Janae Vander Pleog added six kills and a team-high 12 digs.
The opening set saw
Tai Manu-Olevao (6 kills, 10 digs) win four straight points off her serve, the last two aces, to give the 'Bows (7-3) an early 9-6 lead. Taylor extended the lead to five points with a pair of kills, then back-to-back kills from Magill put her team ahead 21-13 and the 'Bows cruised to the win.
The 'Bows used a 6-0 run midway way through set two to take a two-set lead heading into intermission. Magill had a pair of kills and a block in the spurt. NAU hung around and cut the lead to 18-13 on a service ace from Vander Ploeg, but three straight points from the 'Bows put the set to bed.
Hawai'i trailed early in set three after Jacobsen ripped three straight kills to give the Lumberjacks an early 5-1 lead. After a timeout though, the 'Bows settled down and reeled off four straight points to even the set. Hawai'i led by one point midway through the set before back-to-back Manu-Olevao kills ignited a 7-2 run and the 'Bows won going away.
The 'Bows and Lumberjacks play the second of their two-match series on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. following UH's annual alumnae match at 5:00 p.m.
