Others Returning:
Jason MuraokaNewcomers:
Dominique Small,
Ryan Tuiasoa If the final four games of the 2013 season is any indication, the University of Hawai'i offense will revolve around senior running back
Joey Iosefa.
After missing all but one series of the first eight games last season, Iosefa returned to the lineup for a road game at Navy and subsequently finished the year rushing for 586 yards (146.5 per game average) with seven touchdowns, including one passing TD.
The Pago Pago, American Samoa, native eclipsed the 100-yard mark three times with a career-high 191 yards on 35 rushes against Navy. The 35 rushes tied a 28-year-old school record which lasted only one week as Iosefa broke that mark with 37 rushes (on 150 yards rushing) against San Diego State.
At 6-foot, 245-pounds, Iosefa will need to overcome the injury bug, which has forced him to miss 11 games over the past two seasons. Last season he missed seven games with a foot injury, which he suffered prior to fall camp and aggravated in Week 3, in the first series against Nevada.
Sophomore
Steven Lakalaka saw significant action as a true freshman last season making four starts as Iosefa's replacement while rushing for 468 yards on 113 carries and four touchdowns. During the offseason, the Honolulu native slimmed down to 215 pounds from his 240-pound playing weight last season. Lakalaka capped his rookie season with his first career 100-yard game, rushing for 104 yards on 19 carries and one touchdown.
Sophomore
Diocemy Saint Juste rushed for 214 yards while averaging 4.3 yards per carry last season as a true freshman. The Boynton Beach, Fla., native is also a threat on special teams having seen significant action at kickoff returner last season. Saint Juste missed spring practices and so far has been limited in fall camp due to injury.
Also on the roster is
Jason Muraoka, a junior from Honolulu who did not see any action last season but has seen significant amount of reps in fall camp. Junior college transfer
Dominique Small joined the team just before the start of fall camp after spending the past two seasons at Cerritos Junior College. The Lakewood, Calif., native rushed for 387 yards and seven touchdowns during his two-year career.
Weber State transfer
Ryan Tuiasoa must sit out this season due to NCAA transfer rules. The Kailua, O'ahu native saw action in two games in 2013 before missing the rest of the season due to injury.
Justin Vele, a junior from Honolulu, is the only fullback on the roster.
Veteran coach Waynes Moses will oversee the unit this season. Moses comes to UH from Army, where he spent one season on former UH coach Rich Ellerson's staff. Moses' coaching career stretches four decades at both the college and professional levels of which he coached with
Norm Chow at USC in 2001 and UCLA from 2008-10.
He's been a part of 13 bowl teams at 14 different schools and has coached at five different Pac-12 institutions, including multiple stops at UCLA (1990-95 and 2008-11) and Stanford (2002-03 and '05). A total of 33 of his 35 years of coaching has been spent at the college level, including 19 years at Pac-12 schools.
