Hendrik Mol captured the silver medal at the FIVB Beach Volleyball U23 World Championships over the weekend in Myslowice, Poland.
Playing his partner Lars Tvinde and representing their native Norway, Mol and Tvinde finished 4-1 in pool play and won their next four matches to reach the finals. In the championship match, the duo met sixth-seeded Maciej Kosiak and Maciej Rudol of Poland but fell 25-23, 18-21, 15-12. Mol and Tvinde had their chances, holding set point twice in the first set and trailing 13-12 in the deciding set before Poland closed out the match.
In their opening round match, Mol and Tvinde defeated the top-seeded American team of Alex Jones and Kyle Stevenson, 21-15, 21-15. In Round 2, they outlasted the German duo of Lorenz Schumann and Dominik Stork, 21-17, 29-31, 16-14 in a match that lasted 2 hours and 20 minutes.
Mol and Tvinde then took down fellow countrymen Andreas Takvam and Runar Sannames, the No. 4 seeds, in another three-set match, 21-17, 14-21, 15-13, to advance to the semifinals, where they took down fifth-seeded Bennet Poniewaz and David Poniewaz of Germany, 21-11, 21-15.
Last summer, Mol and Tvinde won the silver medal in the U22 European Beach Volleyball Championship in Varna, Bulgaria.
Mol completed his freshman season with the Rainbow Warriors this past season. The Sand, Norway native appeared in 16 matches off the bench at opposite and outside hitter and finished the year with 19 kills, seven digs, three aces and three blocks.
