HERMOSA BEACH, Calif. – The University of Hawaii women's volleyball team completed the second day of competition at the USAV Beach Collegiate Challenge with five different tandems competing in three separate brackets. The day was highlighted by the pair of Katie Spieler and Nikki Taylor, who advanced to finals of the 16-team Silver Bracket.

It marked the fourth time in five tournaments—including the second time in a USAV event this year—that the tandem reached a tournament final. And for the fourth time this year, the pair fell short as top-seeded Alexa Strange and Kelly Claes (USC) barely clipped the third-seeded Spieler and Taylor, 21-13, 14-21, 15-13.
 
UH also got an impressive performance in the Silver Bracket from Ginger Long and Ali Longo who though seeded 12th, won a pair of matches to earn a place in the semifinals, where they were eventually knocked off by Strange and Claes in straight sets.
 
UH's top pair of Karissa Cook and Brittany Tiegs—the lone UH representatives in the Gold Bracket—went 1-1 on the day. Entering the day as the third seed in the elite bracket, the pair won their quarterfinal matchup over Bakersfield's Molly O'Hagan and Debora Araujo before losing to Pepperdine's Kelley Larsen and Kellie Woolevar in three sets, 21-12, 13-21, 15-10.

The tandems of London Chow-Tayler Higgins and Sarah Mendoza-Mikayla Tucker competed in the Bronze Bracket for UH and were each eliminated in the opening round.

The Rainbow Wahine will be back in action in California next week when they wrap up their regular season at the Big West Challenge in Huntington Beach, April 18-19.
