CHULA VISTA, Calif. – The No. 5 University of Hawaii women's sand volleyball team won two of three dual matches on the first day of the USAV Beach Collegiate Challenge Saturday at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista. The Rainbow Wahine were swept by top-ranked Pepperdine, before turning around to defeat Cal State Northridge and Cal State Bakersfield . UH imporved to 5-1 on the year.
The No. 1 Waves were simply too much of the Rainbow Wahine in the first match of the morning, handing UH its first loss of the season by sweeping all courts with the exception of the No. 1 position. That court went the full three sets with Lara Dykstra and Becca Strehlow taking down UH's
Brittany Tiegs and
Karissa Cook, 21-19, 15-21, 15-7. It was Tiegs and Cooks' first loss in seven matches this season, both dual and tournament.
UH rebounded nicely in its next two duals. The Rainbow Wahine blanked Cal State Northridge 5-0, winning in straight sets on three courts, then defeated Cal State Bakersfield, 4-1. The match versus CSUB was decidedly closer with three of the five courts going the distance. UH won two of those scenarios, tipping the match into their favor.
Following the dual match the first round of the 24-team, single-elimination pairs tournament began. The tandems of
