KANEOHE, O'ahu – The University of Hawai'i women's golf team placed seventh at the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational Wednesday at the Kane'ohe Klipper Golf Course on Marines Corps Base Hawai'i.
The Rainbow Wahine fired a final round 308 to finish 917 for the tournament for their best finish since placing sixth in 2010.
No. 35 Mississippi State captured its first Donnis Thompson Invitational title with a 875 total, 21 strokes better than runner-up North Carolina State (896). SMU (897) was third, followed by Gonzaga (905) and Washington State (906).
Individually, Kennesaw State's Ines Lescudier shot a final round 72 to take medalist honors with an even par 216 total. Mississippi State's Jessica Peng finished one stroke back at 1-over 217 while NC State's Augusta James and Mississippi State's Ally McDonald tied for third at 2-over 218.
For the seventh time this season, freshman
Izzy Leung was Hawai'i's top finisher after shooting a final round 1-over 73 to finish with a 227 total and a tie for 18
th place. Her round included one birdie, two bogeys and 15 pars on a difficult day in which none of the 82 participants shot under par and the best score was 72.
Freshman Kelli-Ann Katsuda and sophomore
Nichole Cruz tied for 24
th overall at 229 after each shot 76 and 79, respectively. Freshman
Brianna Becker tied for 40
th at 234 while freshman
Raquel Ek tied for 47
th at 235.
Competing as individuals for the Rainbow Wahine were freshman
Daezsa Tomas (76-77-81=234/t40th) and senior
Charlee Kapiioho-Sagum (79-78-81=238/t55th). Senior
Liana Otake did not start her round due to a nagging shoulder injury.
The Rainbow Wahine will next host the 'Anuenue Spring Break Classic, March 24-26 at The Bay Course at Kapalua on Maui.
