WAIKOLOA, Hawai'i – The University of Hawai'i men's golf team is eight strokes off the first round lead after firing a 9-under 279 Thursday at the Amer Ari Invitational at the Waikoloa Kings Course.
The tourney co-host Rainbow Warriors are tied with fellow co-host Hawai'i-Hilo in the 20-team field which includes 10 nationally ranked Division I programs and two nationally ranked Division II schools. Third-ranked Oklahoma State is the first day leader at 17-under 271 followed by TCU (272), No. 24 USC (273), and No. 16 Texas and No. 27 Auburn (274).
Sophomore
Scotty Yamashita tied his collegiate-low score of 4-under 68 to lead the 'Bows. His round included seven birdies, including four on the front nine. Senior
Nainoa Calip and freshman
Zachary Braunthal are two strokes back after shooting 2-under 70. Calip concluded his round with three straight birdies while Braunthal's steady round included a back-nine 33 of three birdies and six pars.
Freshman
Skye Inakoshi also broke par with a 1-under 71 that included an eagle at the par-5 No. 2 hole. Senior
Tommy Yamashita, who shot 2-over 74, began his round with two bogeys in his first three holes but rallied with 12 straight pars before a birdie at No. 17.
Oregon's Thomas Lim holds the first day lead at 8-under 64 followed by USC's Rico Joey (65). Four players are tied for third at 6-under while a group of seven other golfers are at 5-under.
The tournament continues on Friday with Round 2 at the Waikoloa Kings Course.
