SANTA ANA, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i women's golf team placed ninth at the UC Irvine Invitational Tuesday at the Santa Ana Country Club.
The Rainbow Wahine shot a final round 309 to finish the two-day tournament at 926 (303-314-309). Eighth-ranked Stanford captured the team title at even par 864 after a final round 286. Stanford's Mariah Stackhouse held off Grace Na of Pepperdine to claim medalist honors. Stackhouse finished the tournament at 4-under 212 while Na was two strokes back at 2-under 214.
For the sixth time during her rookie season, freshman
Izzy Leung was the top finisher for the Rainbow Wahine. The Hong Kong native shot a final round 2-over 74 to finish at 229 (76-79-74) to tie for 24
th place. After two bogeys on the front nine, Leung finished her back at even par having parred her final 11 holes.
Fellow freshmen
Raquel Ek and Kelli-Ann Katsuda finished at 230 (75-79-76) and 231 (76-77-78), respectively. Ek fired a 76 during her final round and tied for 27
th while Katsuda shot 78 and tied for 32
nd.
Also competing for the Rainbow Wahine were seniors
Liana Otake (76-81-81=238/t52nd) and
Charlee Kapiioho-Sagum (77-79-83=239/t56th).
The 13-team tournament included four nationally ranked squads and seven nationally ranked individuals. Among the field was five Big West Conference teams of which UH finished fourth, just four strokes behind host UCI. Long Beach State was the top BWC finisher at 894 followed by No. 33 UC Davis (899). UC Riverside finished 13
th at 941.
The Rainbow Wahine will return home to host two tournaments – the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational, March 11-12 at the Kane'ohe Klipper Golf Course and the 'Anuenue Spring Break Classic, March 24-26 at The Bay Course in Kapalua, Maui.
