Men’s Basketball Falls To BYU, 90-70

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Aaron Valdes scored a team-high 24 points for the University of Hawai'i men's basketball team in a 90-70 non-conference loss to BYU, Saturday, at EnergySolutions Arena.
 
BYU's Kyle Collingsworth notched only the third triple-double in NCAA Division I this season with 19 points, 12 rebounds, and 10 assists while Tyler Haws scored a game-high 30 points. Chase Fischer added 20 points, five rebounds, and five assists for the Cougars (7-2), who led 37-30 at halftime.
 
Valdes finished 8-of-14 shooting and a team-high seven rebounds for the Rainbow Warriors (7-3), who saw their three-game win streak come to an end. Freshman Roderick Bobbitt, who is one of the three players with a triple-double this season, tallied 15 points, seven assists, and five steals while Garrett Nevels added 12 points.
 
The 'Bows trimmed a 14-point second half deficit to four following a 10-0 run to close within 54-50 with just over 11 minutes to play. But the Cougars responded with a 12-4 run to push their lead back to double digits. BYU enjoyed its largest lead at 84-62.
 
The first half was a game of runs as each team used 13-0 spurts. UH's run was spurred by three straight three-pointers – two by Valdes and one by Nevels – while BYU's run was part of a 20-4 surge to close out the first half.
 
In addition, the Cougars had a pair of 8-0 runs while the 'Bows scored the game's first seven points.
 
UH shot 38 percent from the field, including 28 percent from three-point range. BYU finished 48 percent and assisted on 23 of its 29 baskets. The Cougars also controlled the boards holding a 48-30 advantage.
 
The 'Bows return to Honolulu and will play a neutral site game against Chaminade, Dec. 19, at the Blaisdell Arena.
