HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i men's basketball team went toe-to-toe with the nation's 11
th-ranked team but fell short in an 80-79 overtime heartbreaker to Wichita State, Tuesday in the semifinals of the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic. The 'Bows will play Colorado on Thursday in the third-place game at 1:30 p.m.
Â
It was an electric Stan Sheriff Center crowd that nearly saw Hawai'i pull its second upset in as many days.
Aaron Valdes, whose jumper and three-pointer gave UH the lead with under a minute to play, equaled
Isaac Fleming's season-high 17 points.
Negus Webster-Chan nearly had a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds.
Â
The 'Bows looked prime for the upset when
Stefan Jankovic (12 pts, 5 reb) nailed a three pointer and
Mike Thomas (9 pts) popped a jumper to give their team a 77-74 lead with 2:17 to play in overtime. The 'Bows led by two with less than a minute remaining before an errant UH turnover led to a three pointer from Fred Vanvleet (13 pts) that helped the Shockers escape with the win.
Â
Ron Baker had 17 points for the Shockers (10-1) who move on to Thursday's championship game against George Washington.
Â
It was a sloppy start for both teams. The 'Bows didn't get their first points until Valdes completed a three-point play 4:05 into the game. UH went to the bench early and got itself back in the game. Fleming scored on a pair of driving layups and tapped in a Webster-Chan miss to help the 'Bows to a 14-13 lead.
Â
Fleming kept up his hot start, hitting on his first four shots including a step-back three-pointer to help keep the lead for the 'Bows. Hawai'i led by five points with just under six minutes left in the half, but a 9-1 Shocker run reversed the tide and Wichita State grabbed a four-point lead. Jankovic got it going just prior to the break, scoring on an impressive post move then hitting a jumper to hold Wichita State to just a one-point halftime lead.
