Garrett Nevels led a well-balanced attack with 19 points and the University of Hawai'i men's basketball team won the Gulf Coast Showcase consolation title with a 75-73 defeat of East Carolina on Wednesday at Germain Arena.
The ECU win caps a successful eight-game, 13 day start to the season for UH (6-2) with half of the wins coming away from the Stan Sheriff Center. Four starters posted double figures in points with
Mike Thomas adding nine points. Nevels and
Aaron Valdes (15 pts) both corralled a game-high nine rebounds.
Caleb White led ECU (3-3) with 16 points and eight rebounds.
For the second straight game, the 'Bows had to fight off a late surge from their opponent. UH led by nine points after a Roderick Bobbit layup early in the second half, but trailed 56-54 at the 8:18 mark after BJ Tyson's dunk capped a 13-2 Pirate run. Bobbitt had a solid overall performance, posting 10 points while grabbing six rebounds and dishing out six assists.
The 'Bows recovered and retook their nine-point lead when
Dyrbe Enos knocked down his first three-pointer of the season with 4:01 remaining. ECU made of a game of it down the stretch, but Bobbitt sunk three key free throws to seal the win for the Hawai'i.
The 'Bows now return home and will host Delaware State on Tuesday, Dec. 2 at the Stan Sheriff Center.
