Nikki Taylor became the first UH player in the rally-scoring era to record a triple-double, and the University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team overcame a sluggish start to beat Cal Poly in Big West Conference action on Saturday night at the Mott Athletics Center. Set scores were 21-25, 25-22, 25-12, 25-16.
Nikki Taylor had 10 kills, 11 blocks, and 10 digs and helped the 'Bows (19-6, 11-3 BWC) to 19.5 total team blocks and remain in the hunt for a postseason berth.
Kalei Greeley had 11 kills and 10 digs and
Kalei Adolpho had 11 kills and 11 blocks.
Taylor Gruenewald had 16 kills to lead the Mustangs who fall to 9-16 and 4-11 in the Big West. Baily Roach had a team-high 15 digs.
The opening set went back and forth from the get go until Cal Poly scored four straight points to take a 20-16 lead and force a Hawai'i timeout. Gruenewald posted back-to-back kills in the quick Mustang spurt. Greeley's service ace cut the lead to 21-19, but Cal Poly pulled away to take the one-set lead.
Set two saw Adolpho and Greeley get in on a block to give the 'Bows an early two-point lead, but Cal Poly came back as Gruenewald's kill gave her team a 13-11 lead. Greeley then caught fire, reeling off three straight kills to help Hawai'i take a comfortable 20-15 lead.
A block party ensued in set three as the 'Bows put down 11 team blocks in the third set alone en route to their most dominant set win of the season. After giving up the set's first point, the Rainbow Wahine ran off 10 straight forcing a couple of Cal Poly timeouts along the way. UH kept the nine-point margin until Taylor got in on a pair of blocks to extend the lead to 19-6 and the 'Bows sprinted to the win.
UH carried the momentum into set four and cruised to the four-set win.
The 'Bows now return home for their final regular season matches. They'll face UC Riverside on Friday, Nov. 28 and UC Davis on Saturday for Senior Night. Both matches are set for an 8:00 p.m. start time.
