Bobbitt Gets Triple-Double, ‘Bows Cruise Past UH-Hilo

Box Score | Box Score (html)

HONOLULU – Roderick Bobbitt recorded only the second triple-double in school history and set a school record with 10 steals to lead the University of Hawai'i men's basketball team to an 89-71 blowout win over UH-Hilo Wednesday night at the Stan Sheriff Center.

Bobbitt's 12 points, 10 assists, and 10 steals gave him UH's first triple-double since 1975. His 10 steals also broke a 21-year old single-game Hawai'i record. Not to be outdone, Aaron Valdes set a career high for the second time this season, scoring 31 points on 11-15 from the floor. He scored early and often, living in the paint and getting to the charity stripe 12 times (8-12).

The Rainbow Warriors improved to 3-1 on the season after falling to High Point in the title game of the Outrigger Resorts Rainbow Classic.

Tre Johnson led the Vulcans (1-2) with 25 points and 10 rebounds. Marcello Campbell added 13 points.

The 'Bows couldn't have gotten off to a hotter start, scoring the first nine points and opening up a 19-4 lead just under six minutes into the game. The Vulcans slowly crept back into the game though as Stefan Jovanovic (2 pts, 4 reb) and Mike Thomas (7 pts, 3 reb) both picked up their third fouls and Negus Webster-Chan played only eight minutes after picking up his second foul. UH led by nine points at the break.

It took a few minutes for either team to get going in the second half, but the 'Bows did just that when Valdes hit a jumper and a reverse layup to help UH open up a 56-41 lead. Hawai'i later went on a 10-0 run capped by another Valdes layup to take a 66-45 lead with 12:47 remaining in the game.

Garrett Nevels contributed 14 points and six rebounds and Isaac Fleming added 12 points and four assists.

UH now travels to Wailuku, Maui for a matchup with Pittsburgh at War Memorial Gym. Tip-off is set for Friday, Nov. 21 at 7:00 p.m.
