Former UH Quarterback Michael Carter To Serve As Honorary Captain

HONOLULU – Michael Carter, the former University of Hawai'i quarterback who led the Rainbow Warriors to a 1992 Holiday Bowl victory, will serve as honorary captain for Saturday's Mountain West opener against Wyoming.

Kick-off is 6:00 p.m. at Hawaiian Airlines Field at Aloha Stadium. Carter will accompany UH's game captains at midfield for the pre-game coin toss.

Carter, a four-year letterman from 1990-93, directed the 'Bows to a then-school record 11-win season in 1992 and share of the school's first Western Athletic Conference title. The Long Beach, Calif., native earned Holiday Bowl MVP honors after leading UH to a 27-17 victory over Illinois.

In his first career start at quarterback, Carter rushed for a then-school record 214 yards in a 32-17 victory at Wyoming in 1991. The following year, he led the 'Bows to another win over the Cowboys that clinched the WAC title and Holiday Bowl berth.

He was one of only three quarterbacks in NCAA history to rush and pass for 1,000 yards in a single season and finished his career atop the school's record book for total offense (6,032) and touchdowns scored (38).

Previous honorary captains this season include Rick Blangiardi (Washington), Rockne Freitas (Oregon State), and Governor Neil Abercrombie (Northern Iowa).
