Box Score (pdf)WAIPAHU, Oahu – The University of Hawai`i women's soccer team picked up its first Big West win of the season with a dramatic 2-1 double-overtime win over UC Riverside Sunday night at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
Krystal Pascua scored the golden goal in the 103rd minute to lift UH to victory.
It was the second game-winning overtime goal this year for Pascua, who also netted the decisive score in UH's 2-1 win over Seattle. The win proved crucial as UH (6-6, 1-1 BWC) bounced back from a tough 2-1 loss to Cal State Fullerton on Thursday and avoided an 0-2 conference start at home.
It was a meeting between the two most prolific teams in the Big West, however the match started as a defensive stalemate. UH held the Highlanders to just one shot in the first 60 minutes of the match. The Bows, meanwhile, had six shots in the first half, though most were not on target.
Things changed in the second half as both teams started to create more offensive chances. UCR (5-4-3, 0-1-1 BWC) got on the board first when Blanca Barrio hammered in a volley off a Tyler Cunningham cross at the 78:59 mark. UH, however, answered just 25 seconds later when
Storm Kenui out-muscled a UCR defender for the ball and hit a shot that bounced of the far post and into the goal. It was the team-leading fifth goal of the year for the sophomore.
The teams played the next 10 minutes of regulation scoreless, as well as the first 10 minute overtime period before the game-deciding play early in the second overtime period. The play started with
Sonest Furtado streaking down the right flank and sending a cross into the mouth of the UCR goal. The Highlanders looked to clear the ball but couldn't get it past Pascua who settled the ball and ripped a high shot from 12 yards out for her fourth goal of the year.
With the win UH improved to a perfect 3-0 in overtime matches this year with the others coming against Seattle (2-1) and at Weber State (4-3).
The Rainbow Wahine next head to the road for a pair of Big West matches at UC Santa Barbara (Oct. 10) and Cal Poly (Oct. 12).
