VIDEO: Scrimmage HighlightsHONOLULU – Fans got their first glimpse of the 2014-15 University of Hawai'i men's basketball team with the Green & White Scrimmage Saturday night at the Stan Sheriff Center. The team conducted a pair of scrimmages, some shooting contests and a rousing dunk contest, before concluding the night with an autograph session.
The evening began with head coach
Gib Arnold introducing the players and staff for the 2014-15 campaign. In the first 12-minute scrimmage the Green Team ran away from the White Team, 37-24. Sophomores
Mike Thomas and
Aaron Valdes combined for 24 of the Green points while converting all 10 of their attempts. With four UH players sidelined for the evening—including three bigs—UH went light on the scrimmage and capped the night with a four-minute run that was again one by the Green, 17-14.
The team also held a three-point contest with
Stefan Jankovic and
Garrett Nevels shooting their way to victory. The highlight of the night though, as always, was the annual dunk contest. Thomas, Nevels and freshman
Isaac Fleming challenged for the title, but it wasn't close as sophomore
Aaron Valdes successfully defended his 2013 championship. Valdes wowed the fans with a trio of throw-downs, including an alley-oop hammer, a 360-alley-oop windmill off the side of the backboard, and a flying slam over freshman
Brocke Stepteau.
The Rainbow Warriors will return to the court Thursday, Nov. 6 when they host Hawai'I Pacific in an exhibition game at 7:00 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center.
