VIDEO: Highlights HONOLULU – After two straight losses and a 12-day layoff, the University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine volleyball team returned to the court to power past Cal Poly, 25-17, 25-18, 25-22 on Friday night at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Tai Manu-Olevao had a match-high 15 kills for the 'Bows (13-5, 5-2 Big West) who had to mount a serious rally in set three to complete the sweep. UH trailed 21-18 before storming back after a timeout and finishing the set on a 7-1 run.
Tayler Higgins (39 assists, 3 blocks) had a kill and a block to cut the lead to 23-22 then, after a Cal Poly timeout,
Olivia Magill (11 kills, 5 blks) and Manu-Olevao ripped back-to-back kills to give UH the win.
Taylor Gruenewald and Caihla Petiprin both had eight kills to lead the Mustangs (7-11, 2-6 Big West). Nicole Kessler had a team-high 13 digs and Savannah Nieman added four blocks.
Set one featured a see-saw battle until
Kalei Greeley's kill put the 'Bows up 15-12, their largest lead of the set to that point. Greely finished one dig short of a double-double, finishing with 11 kills and nine digs. Later, back-to-back kills by
Kalei Adolpho (6 kills, 5 blks) put UH ahead 21-15 and Magill iced the set with one of her six kills in the frame.
UH led by five points early in set two then extended to a 13-7 lead off back-to-back Manu-Olevao kills. The Mustangs got back in the set on three straight Nieman blocks, but a kill by Higgins and another by
Nikki Taylor (3 kills, 4 digs) stemmed the tide and the 'Bows cruised to the win.
The 'Bows return to action on Sunday when they host UC Santa Barbara at the Stan Sheriff Center. First serve is set for 4:00 p.m.
