Scotty Yamashita fired a first round 62 to lead the University of Hawai'i men's golf team at the season-opening Alister MacKenzie Invitational, Monday at the Meadow Club.
Yamashita, a junior from Honolulu, posted seven birdies and one eagle in a bogey-free first round to momentarily take the individual lead at 9-under par. However, his lead dwindled during a second round 9-over 80 that featured six bogeys, one double, and one triple. Yamashita is currently tied for 30
th at even-par 142.
As a team, the Rainbow Warriors are currently in 15
th place at 581 (281-300). Arizona State (549) holds a two-stroke lead over host California (551) followed by Oregon State (552), San Diego State (557), and UC Davis (558).
UH senior
Brian Lee is three strokes behind Yamashita at 3-over 145 (72-73) and is tied for 49
th while junior
Justin Chu shot rounds of 73 and 74 for a 147 total and is tied for 64
th. Also competing for the Warriors are senior
Ryan Kuroiwa (74-76) and sophomore
Skye Inakoshi (74-77).
Colorado's Yannik Paul holds a one-stroke lead in the individual leaderboard at 9-under 133 following rounds of 66 and 67. Arizona State's Max Rottluff and California's Sebastian Crampton are each one stroke back at 8-under.
The tournament concludes on Tuesday with the third and final round.
