No. 21 Hawai'i Drops Five-Set Heartbreaker To Long Beach State

Box Score | Box Score (html)

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Kalei Greeley posted her second double-double with 10 kills and 14 digs and the 'Bows twice rallied from a set down and a late set-four deficit, but it wasn't enough as the No. 21 University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine volleyball team fell in five sets to Long Beach State, Saturday at the Walter J. Pyramid. Set scores were 25-15, 22-25, 26-24, 21-25, 15-11.

Tai Manu-Olevao had 16 kills, 13 digs, and three blocks but the 'Bows hit a season low .131 to fall to 12-5 overall and 4-2 in the Big West Conference. Emily Maglio had five kills and hit .308 off the bench, replacing Olivia Magill who suffered a lower leg injury in the second set.

Bre Mackie delivered a match-high 20 kills and nine blocks for Long Beach State (14-4, 4-0 BWC). Ashley Murray added nine kills and shared match-high honors in blocks with Mackie.

Hawai'i forced a deciding set after a tremendous set four rally. The 'Bows trailed by five midway through the set and 20-17 after a Mackie kill, but UH quickly turned the table and finished on an 8-1 run. Manu-Olevao had a pair of aces in the run and the 'Bows kept their hopes alive.

Nikki Taylor's (9 kills, 11 digs) kill gave UH a 5-3 lead in set five but the momentum shifted to LBSU who responded to take a 10-7 lead. The 'Bows would not go away quietly though and tied the score at 11-11, but the 49ers put a halt to the run and polished off Hawai'i with four straight points.

The Rainbow Wahine evened the match before the break when they pulled away late in the second set. The set saw 13 ties before Hawai'i scored four of the last five points. Greeley's kill tied the score at 20-20 and the 'Bows never trailed from there. A service ace from Taylor and block assists from Kalei Adolpho (4 kills, 3 blocks) and Tayler Higgins (12 digs, 3 blocks) gave UH a 23-21 lead and the 'Bows held on.

Manu-Olevao nearly pulled off a set three win for UH. She drilled three straight kills late in the set, the first cutting the 49er lead to one and the next two to tie the score. Murray got a kill to break a 24-24 tie however, and Higgins's error resulted in the win for LBSU.

The 'Bows now return home to host Cal Poly on Friday, Oct. 24 and UC Santa Barbara on Sunday, Oct. 26.
