Box Score (html)NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – The No. 21 University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine volleyball team suffered its first sweep to a conference opponent since 2010, falling to CSUN 25-17, 25-20, 25-21 on Friday night at the Matadome.
Â
Nikki Taylor and
Kalei Greeley both had eight kills for the 'Bows (12-4, 4-1 BWC) who dropped their first Big West Conference match in a big way and had their 21-set win streak snapped.
Kalei Adolpho had a match-high seven blocks to lead Hawai'i to a 10-3 advantage in that category.
Â
Utah State was the last conference opponent to sweep Hawai'i, winning in straight sets in the final of the 2010 Western Athletic Conference tournament.
Â
The Matadors (12-4, 3-1 BWC) were led by Danetta Boykin's match-high 14 kills and Casey Hinger who hit .529 on 10 kills.
Â
The opening set saw CSUN take control with a 7-2 run midway through. Boykin posted four kills during that stretch to give the Matadors a 13-8 lead. Adolpho got a kill out of the subsequent UH timeout, but the 'Bows never got closer than five points as the Matadors ran away for the first set win.
Â
The 'Bows made a late run in set two after trailing early but were never able to erase the deficit. Natalie Allen's kill put CSUN ahead 17-11, but UH reeled off six of the next seven points to cut the lead to 18-17. That would be as close as the 'Bows would get though as CSUN closed the set on a 6-2 run.
Â
A pair of Greeley kills helped the Rainbow Wahine to an early 6-3 lead in set three which was quickly erased after a 6-1 CSUN run. The lead swelled to seven points but the 'Bows again rallied, this time evening the set at 21-21 only to see the Matadors close the set on a 4-0 run and complete the sweep.
Â
The 'Bows will have little time to recover as they next travel to Long Beach State to face the 49ers on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. PT (4:00 p.m. HT). The match will be broadcast live on ESPN3.
