HONOLULU - In front of a sold-out crowd at the Stan Sheriff Center, the No. 9 University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine volleyball team had every answer for 10th-ranked UCLA in a 25-18, 25-17, 25-18 sweep on Saturday night in the championship match of the Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Volleyball Classic.
Emily Hartong had a match-high 15 kills for UH (5-1) with Jade Vorster and Kalei Adolpho each contributing seven kills. Ali Longo had a match-high 11 digs with Adolpho also putting down five blocks.
Longo and Mita Uiato were named to the all-tournament team with Hartong voted Most Outstanding Player.
For the Bruins (5-1), Kelly Reeves had a team-high eight kills with Mariana Aquino adding five blocks.
The sellout was the first for the 'Bows since the 2011 Honolulu Regional against Southern California, and came less than 24 hours after Dave Shoji became the winningest Division I coach of all-time. It was also the first win over UCLA since 2009.
The early goings of the opening set were a perfect reflection of the evenly match opponents. The 'Bows were relentless though and began to build a solid lead on the heels of multiple kills by Hartong, Adolpho, and Nikki Taylor (6 kills). The dominance continued as the 'Bows went on a 6-2 run to stretch the lead to 18-11 and cruise to the win.
Set two saw UCLA take an early 9-7 advantage but the 'Bows got it together and took the lead at 16-13 off an Adolpho kill and an Uiato block. UCLA called a timeout trailing 19-16 only to come back and see Hartong drill two straight kills to put the set away.
The intermission did nothing to change the momentum as the 'Bows separated themselves early. After a Reeves kill tied the set at 9-9, UH ran off four straight points highlighted by a pair of Hartong kills. UCLA closed the set to two points but the 'Bows recorded three straight points to complete the impressive sweep.
Hawai'i returns to action next weekend for the Outrigger Hotels and Resorts Volleyball Challenge. The tournament runs from Sept. 12-14 and includes Northwestern, Portland State, and Arizona.
