Match Notes | Video: Rainbow Wahine To Watch - Nikki Taylor
HONOLULU – The No. 9 University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team continues its home stand with the Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Volleyball Classic from Sept. 5-7 at the Stan Sheriff Center.
The Rainbow Wahine open the tournament on Thursday, Sept. 5, hosting New Mexico State then face Santa Clara on Friday, Sept. 6 before playing the finale against UCLA on Sunday, Sept. 7. All start times are set for 7:30 p.m.
The 'Bows served notice to the nation this past week when they upended top-ranked and defending NCAA national champion Texas in their season opener. It was the program's first win over a No. 1-ranked team since the 2000 squad beat UCLA at the Hawaiian Airlines Classic. Hawai'i lost a five-set heartbreaker to San Diego in the finale on Sunday but won the title based on tournament tiebreaker rules.
Head Coach Dave Shoji enters the Classic just one win shy of tying former UCLA coach Andy Banachowski for the most wins in NCAA Division I women's volleyball history. Shoji currently has 1,105 victories and will be looking to tie and even break the record this week.
The 'Bows are led by senior outside hitter Emily Hartong who was recently named the Big West Player of the Week. In her three opening weekend matches, which included UH's win over Texas, Hartong drilled an average of 5.17 kills per set and hit at a .356 clip. Against the Longhorns, she posted a team-high 18 kills and added seven digs, and versus San Diego in the final match of the tournament, she equaled her second highest career total of 30 kills while adding 12 digs for her first double-double of the season. She also became the 18th Rainbow Wahine player to eclipse 1,000 career kills.
