HONOLULU – Former University of Hawai'i quarterback Garrett Gabriel, who led the Rainbow Warriors to a pair of blowout victories over Brigham Young in 1989 and '90, will serve as honorary captain at Saturday's football game against Fresno State.
Gabriel, a four-year letterman from 1987-90, finished his career as the program's leader in passing yards (5,631) and total offense (6,181). He accounted for 57 total touchdowns and once held the UH single-game passing record of 440 yards, which he threw against BYU in 1989.
In that game, Gabriel completed 22 of 29 passes and four touchdowns in a 56-14 rout of the 18
th-ranked Cougars. The win snapped a 10-game losing streak to their arch-rival and helped propel the 'Bows to the Jeep Eagle Aloha Bowl, the school's first major bowl appearance.
The following year, the Maryknoll High School graduate orchestrated another blowout win over the Cougars, who entered the game ranked fourth. Gabriel led UH to a 59-28 rout, on the same day BYU quarterback Ty Detmer received the Heisman Trophy. Gabriel outplayed Detmer for the second straight year, throwing for 359 yards and three touchdowns.
Gabriel will accompany UH's captains for the coin toss. Kick-off for Saturday's Mountain West contest is 6:05 p.m. at Hawaiian Airlines Field at Aloha Stadium.
