HONOLULU –
Kalei Adolpho had 10 kills and a match-high six blocks,
Emily Hartong posted a double-double with 12 kills and 13 digs and the University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine volleyball team swept Portland State (25-21, 25-20, 25-14) on opening night of the Outrigger Hotels and Resorts Volleyball Challenge.
UH (6-1) had trouble finding a rhythm in the first two sets but eventually discovered its form to cruise to wins in both sets. Set three was all Hawai'i from the get-go as UH closed the set on a 7-2 run for the easy win.
Kaeli Patton had nine kills to go along with six digs to lead Portland State, who fell to 3-5 on the season. Aubrey Mitchell posted seven kills and Kasimira Clark had a team-best 10 digs.
Tai Manu-Olevao had seven kills, six digs, and a pair of blocks for the 'Bows and
Ali Longo added 11 digs.
Set one saw UH score three straight points before Portland State came back to win five of the next six and take a 5-4 lead. The lead stretched to four points off a Katie O'Brien (3 kills, 5 blks) kill to give the Vikings a 13-9 lead and force a Hawai'i timeout. The 'Bows battled back and after winning five of the next six points, spearheaded by a pair of kills each from Hartong and Adolpho, grabbed a 21-17 lead and cruised to the first set win. Hartong led all hitters at that point with five kills.
In the second set, UH again got off to slow start as a kill by Patton and a Cheyne Corrado (3 kills, 6 digs) block helped PSU build a 9-4 lead. As in set one, the 'Bows battled back and took a 14-13 lead off a thunderous Hartong kill. The run continued as UH extended the lead to 17-13 and paced to the 25-20 win.
In the earlier match, Arizona beat Northwestern in four sets (25-22, 25-27, 25-20, 25-19).
The tournament continues on Friday when Hawai'i takes on Northwestern at 7:30 p.m. The match will be preceded by Arizona versus Portland State at 5:00 p.m.
