HONOLULU – Emily Hartong drilled a sensational 30 kills to go along with 12 digs, but it wasn't enough as the University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine volleyball team lost a five-set heartbreaker to San Diego on Sunday at the Chevron Rainbow Wahine Invitational. Set scores were 15-25, 26-24, 25-19, 23-25, 15-11.

Despite the loss, the 'Bows (2-1) won the tournament on set differential. Ali Longo shared match-high honors in digs (25) with USD's C'era Oliveira, Jade Vorster posted 10 kills and three blocks, and Nikki Taylor added nine kills and three blocks on a night where she hit just .103.

Sandra Lozic led USD with 22 kills and Chloe Ferrari had a match-high seven blocks.

UH looked to have the match under control after a 25-15 first-set drumming of the Toreros. San Diego (2-1) responded in set two by taking an early 7-2 lead, but Hawai'i still carried a 22-18 lead late in the set. Kills by Lozic and Katie Hoekman (13 kills, 4 blks) cut the lead to 22-20, but Hartong rifled down a Mita Uiato (39 ast, 11 digs) set to give her team a 23-20 lead. Another Hartong kill gave the 'Bows set point, but three straight points by USD, the final two off kills from Alaysia Brown (14 kills, 4 blks), sealed the win.

UH dropped set three in disappointing fashion, but rallied with a 25-23 win in set four to push the match to a fifth and deciding set. The 'Bows again led late but this time held on for the win. A Kalei Adolpho (7 kills, 2 blks) kill gave UH a 21-18 lead but Brown's kill cut the advabtage to 21-20. UH sealed the win, though, after kills by Vorster and Ashley Kastl (5 kills, 7 digs).

Hawai'i led early in the final set but couldn't sustain the momentum. The 'Bows took an early 4-1 lead but USD evened the score at 5-5 after a pair of Hoekman kills. UH never held the lead again and despite a pair of late kills by Hartong, USD won the set and pulled off the upset

Following the match, Uiato and Hartong were named to the all-tournament team with Hartong selected Most Outstanding Player.

The 'Bows return to action this week when they host the Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Volleyball Classic from Sept. 5-7 at the Stan Sheriff Center.
