HONOLULU – Emily Hartong had a match-high 14 kills, Nikki Taylor added 10 kills of her own, and the No. 11 University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine volleyball team swept UTEP 25-20, 25-15, 25-10 on day two of the Chevron Rainbow Wahine Invitational.
The 'Bows suffered no hangover after beating top-ranked Texas on Friday. The team hit a scorching .474 with Taylor flirting with perfection at .769. Taylor missed kills on three of her swings but went error-free.
Talia Jones led the Minors with nine kills and Victoria Valencia had a team-best eight digs.
UH held a steady lead through most of the first set, but after a Jones kill and a Kaela Goodman error, UTEP had shaved the lead to 18-17. The 'Bows responded by closing the set with four straight points which were highlighted by a pair of Hartong kills and an Ali Longo ace. Longo finished with a match-high 15 digs.
The 'Bows made quick work of the Minors in the final two frames. Ashley Kastl (9 kills, 8 digs) and Kristiana Tuaniga both started set two and helped UH run away with the win. UTEP hung around until midway through the set as a Lindsey Larson (2 kills) kill cut UH's lead to 13-10. The 'Bows caught fire down the stretch though, winning eight of the set's final 10 points to take a two-set lead.
Hawai'i completely dominated the third set, racing out to a 6-0 lead and never looking back.
Middles Jade Vorster and Kalei Adolpho both contributed five kills each and Tuaniga recorded a match-high three blocks.
In the two earlier matches of the day, No. 1 Texas swept UTEP in the morning match 25-13, 25-19, 25-21, then beat San Diego in five sets (19-25, 25-18, 21-25, 30-28, 15-10).
UH faces San Diego on Sunday in the final match of the tournament. First serve is set for 5:00 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center.
