Poljakova, Suworowa Earn First-Team Conference Honors

IRVINE, Calif.--University of Hawai'i women's tennis players Katarina Poljakova and Xenia Suworowa both earned Big West First Team honors in singles and the two were also voted to the first team in doubles by the league's coaches on Tuesday.

Poljakova, a senior from Vysoke Tatry, Slovakia, was named to the Big West first team after being selected to the Western Athletic Conference's first team the previous two seasons. In singles, she posted a 9-7 record—5-4 at the No.1 position and 4-3 as the No. 2. Poljakova won five straight matches at No. 1 in February with two wins coming over ranked teams (No. 65 Long Beach State and No. 42 San Diego). She finished her stellar career ranked No. 14 in UH singles history with a 57-43 overall record. Poljakova also has excelled in the classroom throughout her career at Hawai'i, earning WAC All-Academic honors her first three years. Poljakova was one of three Slovakians selected to the singles first team.

For Suworowa, a junior from Berlin, Germany, it is the first time that she has earned conference honors in singles or doubles. Suworowa started the season playin three matches at the No. 3 slot. She then played six as the No. 2 before rising to UH's No. 1 singles position for the final nine matches of the season. Overall, she posted a 6-11 record while going 4-5 at No. 1.

In doubles, the duo of Poljakova and Suwarowa played 13 times as a tandem and went 7-5 (with one match unfinished) overall and an impressive 6-2 record in conference play--including winning four of their last five in Big West action. Poljakova completed her UH career ranked No. 13 in doubles with a 50-47 overall mark. It is the third time that Poljakova has earned first team conference doubles honors. In 2010 as a freshman, she and partner Sophie Kobuch were selected to the WAC's first team and in 2011 the pair of Poljakova and Barbara Pinterova were also voted to the first team in the WAC.
