Final Results
TEMPE, Ariz. – The University of Hawai'i men's golf team placed 16
th at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational which concluded Sunday at the Karsten Golf Course.
The Warriors shot a final round 295 to finish at 899 (313-291-295). UNLV edged top-ranked California for the team title by one stroke with a final round 277 for an 843 total. Both teams started the day tied for fourth. New Mexico, the team leader after the first and second rounds, shot 288 to finish fourth.
Oregon State's Nick Chianello went wire-to-wire for the medalist honors with a 1-under 70 on Sunday to finish at 11-under overall. Iowa State's Scott Fernandez and Cal's Brandon Hagy was one stroke back.
UH's top fnisher was freshman
Scotty Yamashita, who shot a final round 2-over 73 for a 223 total (78-72-73), and a tie for 64
th. After a birdie on No. 2, his 11
th hole of the day, the Honolulu native was at even par, which stood all the way to his final hole. He double-bogeyed the par-4 9
th to finish at 73.
Junior
Nainoa Calip shot the best round of the day for the Warriors, an even-par 71. He parred his first eight holes of the day before concluding his round with two birdies, two bogeys, and six pars. The Hilo, Hawai'i native tied for 68
th at 225 (77-77-71).
Junior
David Saka battled back for a 6-over 77. The Honolulu native was 8-over through his first 16 holes before birdies on his final two holes to finish at 227 (79-71-77) and a tie for 80
th place.
Senior
Cory Oride and junior
Tommy Yamashita both tied for 85
th at 229. Oride shot a final round 76 while Yamashita shot 75.
The Warriors continue their road trip by competing in the Wyoming Cowboy Classic, April 8-9 in Scottsdale, Ariz.
