MORAGA, Calif. – Chas Okamoto went three sets in the deciding singles match but lost in a third-set tiebreaker as the University of Hawai'i Warrior tennis team fell to St. Mary's, 4-3, on Sunday at Timothy Korst Tennis Complex.
 
The Warriors (6-11) evened the match on three occasions but could not pull off the deciding match at No. 4 singles. Okamoto rallied against Seif El Sherbini but fell 8-6 in the third-set tiebreaker.
 
SMC (9-9) won the doubles point after victories at the one and two. With the point already earned, Jared Spiker and David Schuster topped Thomas Hunt and El Sherbini in a tight match, 8-7 (7-2).
 
Jonathan Brooklyn evened the match with the first singles finish. At the two, he won the first set 6-2 before his opponent retired in set two. Jesse Kiuru cruised past Spiker at the one to regain the lead for the Gaels, but Nils Shuhmann even the match again with a 6-3, 7-6 win on the No. 5 court. The Warriors trailed for a third time after Danilo Casanova lost at the six, but Dmytro Kovalyov rallied at the three with a 3-6, 7-6, 6-1 win to push the match to a deciding set.
 
The Warriors now return home for a brief period before heading back on the road for their final two regular season matches, both against Big West Conference opponents. They will play Cal Poly on Tuesday, Apr. 16 and UC Santa Barbara the following day still eyeing a No. 1 seed in the Big West Tournament.
