SAN JACINTO, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i men's golf team shot an opening round 292 at the Big West Conference Championship Sunday at The Country Club at Soboba Springs to take the first day lead.
The Warriors hold a one-stroke lead over Cal State Fullerton entering Monday's second round. UH junior
Nainoa Calip fired a 3-under 69 and is tied atop the individual leaderboard with CSUF's Corey Gard.
UH is looking for its first-ever conference tournament title in its first Big West Championship.
Calip, a junior from Hilo, Hawai'i, posted six birdies – including three straight at Nos. 4-6, and three bogeys during his round. After his third bogey in six holes at the par-4 14
th, Calip rebounded with consecutive birdies at Nos. 16 and 17 before paring the 18
th to close at 69, his low round of the season.
Senior
Cory Oride and junior
David Saka each shot 1-over 73 and are among a four-way tie for eighth place. Oride, a senior from Lihu'e, Kaua'i, was 1-under through his first eight holes before carding three bogeys over a five-hole stretch. He birdied the closing hole to finish at 73. Saka parred his first nine holes and made one birdie and two bogeys on his second nine.
Freshman
Scotty Yamashita had an up-and-down round with four birdies, seven bogeys, and one double-bogey in his round of 5-over 77. After a birdie on No. 6, the Honolulu native went bogey-double-bogey to make the turn at 5-over. He began his back nine with birdies on Nos. 10 and 11 before posting three more bogeys over the next five holes. He birdied the 18
th to close at 77 and a tie for 31
st place.
Junior
Tommy Yamashita struggled with an 85 and is in 50
th place.
