Women's Tennis Falls at No. 31 UC Irvine

IRVINE, Calif.—The University of Hawai'i women's tennis team fell in its final regular season Big West match at No. 31 UC Irvine, 7-0. Hawai'i ends the regular season with a 5-11 overall record and 4-4 mark in conference while UCI improved to 20-3 overall and a perfect 9-0 in conference on Sunday at the Anteater Tennis Stadium. Hawai'i will be the No. 4 seed in this week's Big West Tournament.

In doubles, No. 2 Rebecca Faltusz and Martina Kostalova were defeated by UCI's Ali Facey and Brooke Schweyer, 8-2. But UH's No. 1 duo of Katarina Poljakova and Xenia Xuworowa evened the match at 1-1 by knocking off 69th-ranked Franziska Gottsching and Kristina Smith, 8-3. But the Anteaters captured the match with an 8-4 victory in the No. 3 match with Marivick Mamiit and Sarah Stadfelt holding off UH's Kelsey Daguio and Paulina Petriskova, 8-4 to secure the point.

The Anteaters won the first two singles matches in straight sets with No. 5 Stadfelt defeating Daguio, 6-3, 6-0 and No. 3 Sarah Gong downing Petriskova, 6-0, 6-1. With UH down, 3-0, the No. 1 match saw UH's Suworowa put up a valiant effort in the first set but she eventually fell 7-6 to 87th-ranked Smith. Smith then turned on the jets to win 6-0 in the second set to capture the match. With the match already won by UCI, the final two matches went into a super tie-breaker. In the No. 6 match, Kat Facey posted a 6-1 win in the first set, but UH's Faltusz rebounded to take the second set 7-5 to even the match. But Facey prevailed in the tiebreaker, 10-4. No. 2 Poljakova dropped her first set to Mamiit, 4-6 but battled back to win the second set, 6-4. Then in the hard-fought tie-breaker, Mamiit edged out Poljakova, 10-7.

The Rainbow Wahine will stay on the road for the Big West Tennis Championship held at Indian Wells Tennis Garden in Indian Wells, Calif. from April 25-28. Hawai'i finished as the No. 4 seed and thus advances to the quarterfinals to face the No. 5 seed (to be determined) at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 26.
