SANTA BARBARA, Calif. –
Dmytro Kovalyov clinched the win in a third-set tibreaker and the University of Hawai'i Warrior tennis team rallied to beat UC Santa Barbara 4-3 on Wednesday at the Rec Cen Courts. The match was the final regular season contest for the Warriors who now await their seeding in next week's Big West Conference tournament.
Kovalyov, playing in his final regular season match for the Warriors (7-12, 4-2 BWC), ousted Sasha Gryaznov 6-3, 4-6, 7-6(7) on the No. 3 court in an intense three-hour match. Kovalyov rallied from a 5-2 deficit in set three before winning the tiebreaker 8-7.
The Gauchos (9-12, 2-3 BWC) took a one-point lead into singles play after grabbing the doubles point with wins at the two and three. Nils Shuhmann and
Carter Lam fell at the two, 8-1, and
Jared Spiker and
David Schuster were blanked on the No. 3 court.
Jared Spiker was first off the court in singles, losing to Ziad Sultan in straight sets 6-3, 6-1. The Warriors countered back when
Jonathan Brooklyn and
Chas Okamoto won in straight sets at the one and four, respectively.
UCSB took a 3-2 lead after Jacob Johnson topped
Danilo Casanova at the six, but Shuhmann pushed to Kovalyov's winner-take-all match when he rallied on the No. 5 court to beat Miles Seemann, 2-6, 6-0, 6-3.
The Big West Tournament begins Thursday, Apr. 25 where UH will be either No. 3 or No. 4 seed. All matches will be played at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden in Indian Wells, Calif.
