HONOLULU -- The University of Hawai`i women's tennis matched its biggest win of the season with a 6-1 rout of Cal State Northridge on Senior Day at the UH Tennis Complex on Saturday afternoon. Lone senior,
Katarina Poljakova helped lead the charge over the Matadors in her final home match of her career.
Hawai`i swept CSUN in doubles to capture the opening point. UH's No. 2 duo of
Martina Kostalova and
Rebecca Faltusz was the first to finish, defeating Maria Pistalu and Lorraine Cheung, 8-3. The No. 1 team of Poljakova and
Xenia Suworowa held off Anna Yang and Sabrina Man-Son-Hing in a tight 9-7 win to win the point. Hawai'i's No. 3 pair of
Paulina Petriskova and
Kelsey Daguio completed the doubles sweep with a clutch 9-8 win over Jessica Warren and Alexis Marquez.
In singles, the senior, Poljakova, started things off with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Yang on the No. 2 court while No. 6 Faltusz knocked off Marquez in straight sets as well, 6-1, 6-4. The Matadors' Pistalu defeated Suworowa in the No. 1 match, 6-3, 6-0 to make the score UH 3, CSUN 1.
The last three matches of the day all went to three sets, but the 'Bows came through strong to finish the match. No. 3 Petriskova sealed the win for the 'Bows with a 6-1, 1-6, 6-3 win over Man-Son-Hing for UH's fourth point. No. 5 Daguio battled back after winning the first set and dropping the second but fought back in deciding set to win 6-2 over Warren, 6-4, 1-6, 6-2. Kostalova then followed with her win, storming back after losing the opening set, 2-6 to win the second set 6-4 and then was tied with Cheung, 1-1 in the final set. But with the match already won by UH, the two squared off in a 10-point tie-breaker. Kostalova won the first six straight points and coasted to a 10-2 win.
Hawai`i will complete their regular season on the road at UC Irvine on Sunday, April 21 with first serve at 11:00 a.m. The Big West tournament will be held at Indian Wells, Calif., April 25-28.
