Day 1 Results
SANTA CRUZ, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i men's golf team is tied for 12th place, while junior
Nainoa Calip is tied for seventh after the first day of the Transamerica/WFG Western Intercollegiate, Saturday at the famed Pasatiempo Golf Club.
The Warriors shot 361 and 381 during the tournament's first two rounds of the play-six, score-five format. UH was tied for ninth after the first round but dropped back after Round 2.
Fifth-ranked UCLA is the Day 1 leader with rounds of 341 and 361 for a 702 total, nine strokes ahead of top-ranked California (350-361). Seventh-ranked Stanford is in third at 717.
Individually, UCLA's Pontus Widegren holds a one stroke lead over teammate Pedro Figueiredo. Widegren shot rounds of 66 and 69 and 5-under for the tournament. Figueiredo shot the day's best round with a 5-under 65 in Round 1 and coupled that with a 1-over 71 in his second 18.
Calip, a junior from Hilo, Hawai'i, is at even par 140 with rounds of 71 and 69. His 69 is even more impressive considering only four golfers shot under par in the second round and he bogeyed three of his final four holes. After 14 holes of his second round, Calip was 4-under after a holing his second shot on the par-4 10
th.
Junior
David Saka is tied for 23
rd at 4-over 144. He opened the tournament with a 1-under 69 in a round that included six birdies. However, he had only one birdie in his second round 75.
Freshman
Scotty Yamashita had an up-and-down day. He shot 1-over 71 in his opening 18 with seven birdies, one bogey and two double-bogeys. His second round unraveled with three straight double-bogeys on Nos. 11-13 and finished with a 79 for a two-round total of 10-over 150.

Reo Saito (74-80), and senior
Cory Oride (81-81).
The tournament concludes on Sunday with the third and final round.
