KAPALUA, MAUI – On the first day of spring break, the University of Hawai'i women's golf team opened play in the 'Anuenue Spring Break Classic, Monday at Kapalua Resort's Bay Course. The Rainbow Wahine are hosting the event for the second consecutive year.
UH shot an opening round 313 led by senior Ka'ili Britos' 5-over 77. No. 31 Pepperdine (285) leads the 18-team field, which includes seven nationally ranked teams. Pepperdine's Grace Na is atop the individual leaderboard with Arizona State's Noemi Jimenez, after each fired a 5-under 67.
Britos, a senior from Honolulu, seemed to turn things around after starting her front nine at 3-over and bogeying No. 13. She birdied the par-4 14
th and par-5 15
th to get to 2-over for the day but double-bogeyed the 16
th and bogeyed the 17
th and finished at 77, which tied her best round at Kapalua.
Freshman
Nichole Cruz also had a rough front nine, starting her day at 5-over before going on an eight-hole stretch at 1-under, which included a birdie at No. 15 and seven pars. She headed into the final two holes at 4-over before posting consecutive bogeys to finish at 6-over 78.
Junior
Liana Otake also shot 78 during her round, which included five bogeys, one double bogey and one birdie. Junior Charlee Kapiioho struggled in the early going and after nine holes was at 9-over before recording three birdies in her next seven holes and finishing at 8-over 80. Senior
Megan Inouye shot an 85 in her final home tournament of her career.
The tournament includes seven Pac-12 teams and numerous former Hawai'i high school standouts, including 'Iolani School graduate, Marissa Chow of Pepperdine, who is tied for seventh at 1-under 71. UCLA's Tiffany Lua, the top-ranked women's golfer, is in an eight-way tie for 10
th at even par 72.
Pepperdine holds a two-stroke lead over No. 10 Washington (287) followed by No. 17 Arizona State (289), San Jose State (294), No. 12 Stanford (294).
The tournament continues on Tuesday with the second round.
