HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine were narrowly defeated by Brigham Young, 4-3, on Saturday, Mar. 16 at the UH Tennis Complex. UH fought back in singles after being swept in doubles, but came up just short, winning three-of-six singles matches.
The Cougars began the match with securing the doubles point after winning on the No. 1 and No. 2 Courts. With the point in hand,
Xenia Suworowa and
Kelsey Daguio still fought hard in their match against Aubrey Paul and Desiree Tran, but fell short in the tiebreaker, 9-8 (4).
In singles action, head coach
Jun Hernandez swapped his top two players, having
Katarina Poljakova play on the No. 2 Court and Suworowa on the No. 1 Court. This decision yielded great results as Poljakova soundly defeated Morgan Anderson, 6-3, 6-0, while Suworowa defeated D. Tran in a close first set, 7-6 (5), and took control in the second set, 6-2.
Martina Kostalova played on the No. 4 Court against Nicolette Tran. After losing the first set, 1-6, Kostalova found her groove as she won the next two sets, 6-3, 6-4. Daguio was the closest Wahine to secure the victory over BYU in a very close three-set match against Mackenna Maddox. Daguio handily defeated Maddox in the first set, 6-1, lost a close second set, 7-5, and could not pull out a win in the third, losing 6-4.
The 'Bows will face UC Santa Barbara in a Big West Conference match this Monday, Mar. 25 at 11:00 a.m. at the UH tennis Complex. This will conclude UH's four-match home-stand.
