RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The #65 University of Hawai'i women's tennis team (2-3, 2-1 Big West) defeated UC Riverside (0-6, 0-3 Big West), 5-2, on Thursday, Feb. 14 at Andulka Park.
UH swept doubles play, safely securing the point going into the singles matches. UH's No. 3 pairing of
Martina Kostalova and
Kelsey Daguio beat Kate Bergeson and Thanh Doan to start the match, 8-4. In the No. 1 match,
Katarina Poljakova and
Xenia Suworowa defeated Taylor Raney and Jamie Raney also by 8-4.
Paulina Petriskova and
Rebecca Faltusz had a tough match against Natalie McKay and Courtney Pattugalan, but were able to come through with a victory in tiebreak, 9-8.
In singles play, UCR evened the score at 1-1 after T. Raney defeated Xuworowa in the No. 2 match. But UH then reeled off four straight wins to win the match. Faltusz cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win over Doan in the No. 6 match then Kostalova defeated McKay on the third court, 6-1, 6-0. Poljakova was able to make quick work against Jamie Raney, winning 6-2, 6-1 and Petriskova was able to beat Pattugalan in the first set 7-6 and kept the momentum into the second set, winning 6-0. In the only three set match of the day, Daguio fell behind Bergeson, dropping the first set 6-4. She quickly regained her composure and won the second set 4-6. In tiebreak for the third set, Daguio could not finish, losing 11-9.
The 'Bows are set to play against Long Beach State on Saturday, Feb. 16 in Long Beach, Calif. at 9:00 a.m.
